Our Farm
Howdy! I’m Melinda Snare, the founder of Feathered Folly Farm. What started as my husband getting on my case for spending too much at Tractor Supply has become my passion and my purpose. Hence the word “folly” in our name!
My husband and I are both Navy veterans. We live here on the farm in Purcellville, VA with our 4 kids and ever evolving array of animals. At the beginning of 2025, we are 7 chickens, 5 Sebastopol geese, 2 chesadoole puppies, and 2 tabby barn cats deep into farm life. The Sebastopol geese are our first intentional endangered livestock acquisition as livestock conservationists.
We learned about the Livestock Conservancy’s conservation priority list through our agricultural community here in Loudoun County, VA. It is our belief that many of these breeds are a critical piece of our agricultural heritage as Americans.
Homestead “Lite”
We identify as Homestead “Lite.” We grow our own vegetables, and raise chickens for meat and eggs. We source the majority of the rest of our diets from local farms like Day Spring Farm and Moutoux Orchard CSA. We are cultivating our land with the intention to sell what we grow, and also to raise enough money to help other farmers acquire endangered livestock breeds for their farms.
Heritage livestock breeds are critical to the homesteading community, because they are largely breeds that were created during a time when small, family farms thrived in the U.S. These breeds were shaped by the preferences of self-reliant farmers, and we want to see them thrive again as many Americans are rediscovering the agricultural traditions of the past. Losing these animals would meaning losing a critical piece of the self-reliant living puzzle that so many of us are trying to put back together as we endeavor to live off of our land.
